What is MADA?

MADA is design. MADA is handicrafts for artists.
The 3 millionth Les Paul or Telecaster is not being recreated here. MADA guitars are unique and not copies. Centuries of tradition and further development are the basis and inspiration for our instruments, on which MADA is based. New uses for local woods and materials are being designed, creating a new appearance that, with a twinkle in the eye, still reminds and connects with many traditions.

Wer ist MADA?

MADA is Adam Wehsely-Swiczinsky.
In his workshop in the heart of Vienna, the musician, trained carpenter, industrial designer and master in the manufacture of plucked and stringed instruments designs and builds his visually and acoustically unique works of art, in collaboration with apprentice Moustafa Mala Bozan

MADA's vision

Our vision is to enrich the world of music through handcrafted guitars that not only provide exceptional sound quality, but also expand the creative expression of musicians around the world. We strive to develop innovative designs that combine tradition and craftsmanship to create instruments that ignite inspiration and passion, helping musicians find and share their unique voice.

What MADA is proud of

Thanks to the exceptional and good cooperation with the Municipal Department 48 of the City of Vienna, we have already been able to save 5.4 tons of CO2 since 2016 by bringing over 700 discarded guitars back to life. Quite apart from the idea of sustainability, this is an interesting and exciting task. Sticker traces, origin and year of manufacture of the instruments reveal a lot about the original owners. Every instrument has a story that it likes to tell us.

Adam is elected as treasurer to the board of the EGB European Guitar Buiders and works with his international colleagues on formats to further develop the art of guitar building and support the professional group

And yes, the fact that thanks to Dennis Jale he was able to get his hands on the original, but rather worn-out Isana Black Pearl by Elvis Presley, work on it and make it playable again, was of course a special experience for him. After all, this guitar was the legendary instrument that Elvis played during his time in the army in Germany. It is thanks to Adam that she is now getting the stage presence she deserves again through Dennis Jale & The Original Band of Elvis Presley. At this point, many thanks to Dennis Jale for the opportunity and to Florian Doppel-Prix and Markus Wallner for the advice!
June 2017
After decades of designing and building guitars, the carpenter, designer and musician is finally taking the master's examination to become a string and string instrument maker at the HTBLA in Hallstadt, supported by helpful reviews from Nupi Jenner and Martin Rainer.

After Adam was already interested in making new, sustainable guitars at MADA Caimes and Suoca, the guitar maker returned to wood as a material in 2015. Except he didn't buy the wood, but instead looked for high-quality scraps. Trees that had to be felled or that fell victim to storm damage, for example.

The fact that a MADA Caimes guitar autographed by Willi Nelson is part of the Hard Rock Café collection, on which he previously played as part of the Ambassadors of Rock Tour in Times Square in New York, makes Adam a little proud. After all, according to Rolling Stone magazine, this legendary musician is ranked 77th among the top 100 guitarists in the world.

Together with a true master of his craft, Viennese luthier Andreas Neubauer and his team at Neubauer Guitars, Adam and his AWS design team developed MADA Caimes, a completely new model of semi-acoustic electric guitar based on the MADA Suoca models from 2000.

AWS design team: Adam Wehsely-Swiczinsky and Ewald “Iv” Neuhofer

Neubauer guitars: Andreas Neubauer, Martin Rainer, Florian Vorreiter, Gregor Riefler, Gabriel Mieth.

Adam Wehsely-Swiczinsky designed, developed and built a flattop and two acoustic jazz guitars for his industrial design thesis at university. Their bodies were made of a hemp material called “Zellfo” or “Hempstone”. A monocoque construction that relies on the complex strip constructions and bent and milled wooden parts.

After deepening his profession as an industrial designer for seven years with partners such as Head, Tyrolia, the Lomographic Society and many others, he took up the project again.

The backstory

Through the path to the goal.
Detours are known to increase local knowledge. The detours that Adam Wehsely-Swiczinsky took over the course of his life meant that he was particularly familiar with his destination, i.e. the place where his craft and artistic work took place.
In 1991, at the age of 20, Adam moved out to fulfill his childhood dream of learning guitar making in Los Angeles. He had been singing and playing music since he was thirteen and wanted more - a truly original, self-designed and self-made instrument!

He was supported in making his dream come true by guitar-making legends Big Jim and John Carruthers, two leading guitar makers in Southern California, who have been supplying world-famous musicians with high-quality, tailor-made instruments for over 50 years.
With his first electric guitar, which he built himself according to his own designs, he returned to Austria motivated and full of visions and then he really got started: He completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter, ran a furniture workshop together with his partner Ingmar Fuhrich, studied industrial design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and during this time not only expanded his knowledge, but also perfected his craftsmanship.

The construction of acoustic instruments with bodies made of Hempstone, a sustainable organic material made from hemp cellulose, was also the topic of his diploma thesis. Numerous national and international awards and designer prizes, which he subsequently received in surprisingly different areas, testify to his talent and his cross-departmental creativity.

Because not everyone who designs guitars can also design ski bindings and healthcare products. Adam can do it - over 15 million pairs of ski bindings built according to his designs by the manufacturer Tyrolia have now been sold over the counter!
